Symposium EE on “Carbon, or Nitrogen-Containing Nanostructured Thin Films” was part of the 2016 EMRS Spring Meeting which took place from May 2nd through 6th in the Lille Grand Palace, France. The sessions of the symposium covered current research on the deposition, characterization, and application of plasma polymers, hard carbon-based and nitride thin films as well as emerging topics on low-dimensional materials and nanocomposites. Specialized sessions also covered important applications of nitrides and carbon-based materials, such as energy and optoelectronic applications, bioapplications, and sensors. The symposium program ran from Monday afternoon until Friday morning and included 43 oral contributions and 61 posters. The 13 contributed papers that successfully passed reviewing procedure adopted for publication in Thin Solid Films are published in this Special Issue as the Proceedings of Symposium EE.
